Vado/Del Cerro Community Garden

History
The CDC began meeting with community members in Vado, Del Cerro, and surrounding colonias in November 2008 to gauge interest in a community garden project.  The CDC received positive interest from a number of people and groups in the community, and a group of youth broke ground for a community garden on private land in February 2009. During the summer of 2009 Cultivando Tradición staff worked with 35 youth from the Teen Outreach Program to maintain the garden. Although the garden did not produce much, the youth learned a great deal through trainings and workshops at the garden and the Del Cerro Community Center. In the fall of 2009, it was decided to abandon this garden site due to inaccessibility and flooding in the neighborhood due to a lack of drainage.  Since the fall of 2009, CDC staff has been working with community members to partner with Dona Ana County and create a community garden at the Del Cerro Community Center.

Current Status
Ground was broken for the Del Cerro Community Garden in April 2010. The Teen Outreach Program and RSVP Senior Citizens Program are actively engaged in building a couple of raised beds and garden plots for the 2010 summer growing season. We are also working with these community groups to secure a water source for the garden.
