Anthony Community Garden
History
The Anthony Community Garden was founded in December 2008 on part of a vacant lot that the Colonias Development Council owns in Anthony. Years ago the site was the home of the St. Anthony’s Catholic Church; the remaining building is rented out to Families and Youth, Inc. During the first year of production, five community members and seven youth grew over 600 pounds of produce. Mikela Licona, the former Promotora del Jardín at the Anthony Community Garden, also helped create the Gadsden Middle School Garden and a garden club program at the Women’s Intercultural Center in 2009.
Current Status
There are currently 11 families with individual garden plots, a youth garden area, a communal garden area, a fully functioning greenhouse, shed storage, compost project, and food forest. The garden is watered with drip irrigation and maintained by garden members. YCC youth are in the process of building an adobe hut that will provide a shaded space and outdoor classroom area. They will also build a traditional adobe oven in 2010.
