The Compressed Earth Block (Adobe) Project
was started to produce a quality, traditional building material
for use by colonia residents and the general public. Adobe
has been used as a building material in the southwest for
centuries, and can be used effectively today to increase the
energy efficiency of a structure. Adobe structures are
very attractive and durable. The Colonias Development
Council is producing a type of adobe that is partially stabilized with
approximately 3% Portland Cement and is compressed using a hydraulic press rather
than sun-dried. This production method results in strong,
water resistant blocks that can be laid immediately. The
soils we are using are from southern New Mexico and are a
combination of sand, clay and silt. Semi-stabilized compressed earth
block does not necessarily require stucco or other finishes- the blocks are
resistant to weathering and water. We can also make a
stabilized block with adequate advance notice. Adobe blocks can be used for
homes, fences, landscaping and other purposes.
Adobe Block Specifications
-
Blocks measure 10” x 14”
X 4” thick. We can also do a special order of 3 ½”
thick blocks with adequate advance notice.
-
Blocks have been tested
to meet New Mexico earth building codes. Blocks
exceed the minimum compressive strength of 300 pounds per
square inch (psi) and the minimum modulous of rupture of 50
pounds per square inch (psi).
-
Blocks are uniform in
size, making them easier to lay. This will result in
savings of time during construction.
-
Blocks come stacked on
shrink-wrapped pallets, which are convenient for delivery.
Each pallet holds 48 blocks and weighs approximately 1 ton.
The pallets can easily be moved with a forklift and the
shrink-wrapping provides protection for the blocks.
-
Each block weighs
approximately 40 pounds.
Production Process
-
Soils are run through a
sieve to remove clumps, rocks, and vegetation.
-
The soils are mixed with
a small amount of Portland Cement and water in a large
mixer.
-
Soil from the mixer drops
onto a conveyor belt and is carried up to the hopper on the
block compressor.
-
The soil is compressed to
produce the final block.
-
Blocks are stacked on
pallets, wrapped, and are ready for transport.
Purchasing Information
Blocks are priced at $1.10
each- this may seem more expensive than some other blocks on the
market, but these blocks are somewhat large than other available
blocks. You should take this into account when comparing
block prices.
Blocks can be picked up at
our site or we can arrange delivery. Shipping charges are
in addition to the price per block, and depend on distance,
number of blocks, and other factors. Please call for
information.
We can negotiate a lower
price per block on orders of over 5,000 blocks.
